Acne Treatment

Get your life back with clear, glowing skin

Acne is the bane of many people’s existence, especially teens. It starts when people hit puberty and their hormones change and the oil producing glands called sebaceous glands release oil called sebum. This is a normal process – until the process goes into overdrive and pores get clogged with dead skin cells, sebum and sometimes even bacteria. This can damage the pores and cause inflammation, which manifests as a typical pimple with redness. If the clog goes deep enough into the pore, it can cause a cyst.

There are many reasons for acne to flare up, including genetics, hormonal changes and an imbalance in the intestinal tract due to poor eating habits. It is said that the skin is a mirror to our gut health and that couldn’t be more true when it comes to acne.  Excessive amounts of sugar (think candy bars and soda) and artificial flavors (see if you can pronounce the ingredients on that bag of chips or cookies) can create an imbalance in acidic (think meat, grains and cheese) versus alkaline (think green veggies and fruit) forming foods. This will lead to a disparity between the “good” bacteria and the “bad” bacteria in your intestines, setting up the stage for acne eruptions.

What Does Acne Treatment Improve?

  • Regular acne/pimples

  • Cystic acne

  • Acne scars

  • Facial/chest/neck redness

  • Large pores

  • Blackheads/Whiteheads (milia) – with microneedling

  • Bumps and blemishes

How Does Acne Treatment Work?

Creams and prescription medication, such as Accutane and/or antibiotics, are the usual course of action for acne treatment, but these may only mask the internal imbalance.

At Luminous You we use a multi-tiered approach to fighting acne. We specialize in laser treatment therapies combined with proper supplementation using Skin Accumax® from Jane Iredale® as a natural alternative to strong medications like Accutane. We also offer diet recommendations and teach proper skin care routines.

Laser beams work by overheating the sebaceous glands, thus decreasing sebum production, killing bacteria and providing localized anti-inflammatory effects. We use BBL (Broadband Light) laser treatments to help heal acne anywhere on the body. For more complicated acne cases (such as cysts or hypertrophic facial acne) we may add Nd:YAG 1064 laser treatments and/or microneedling.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

Combined with dietary changes, one treatment session will produce positive results, but often clients will need more than one treatment depending on their symptoms. 5-6 treatments are usually recommended, but our specialists will create an individualized treatment plan based on your needs.

Acne laser treatment requires a 30-minute time commitment at our clinic (longer for more severe cases). Clients wear protective goggles while we perform the treatment. We start with administering a test shot, and then, if necessary, we apply numbing cream 15 minutes prior to the procedure. Right before we begin the procedure, a cooling gel is applied. A light, tolerable stinging sensation may be felt during treatment. In just a few short minutes you are out the door and able to face the day.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Post-treatment recommendations include discontinuing vigorous exercise, tanning or sauna sessions for 48-72 hours after treatment, a proper skincare regimen and well-balanced nutrition. Your skin may be slightly pink for an hour or longer after treatment, based on the severity of the acne. Depending on the root cause of your acne, our recommendations can increase the remission period of acne or even completely solve the issue. Our experts will guide you through the recommended skincare and dietary strategies to reveal the best you!
